This Monday, April 15, marks the changing of CEOs at Nintendo of America. Fans were shocked to hear of the retirement of CEO Reggie Fils-Aime, after leading the company for 13 years, and even more at his successor: Doug Bowser (yes, you read correctly).

Bowser has been with Nintendo for four years, serving as the Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing; however, it was his last name that caught fans’ attention. Identical to the main villain’s name in the continuing Mario franchise, Twitter did not delay in making memes of Bowser following the announcement of his accession. From photoshopping his face onto the actual body of Bowser to making edits of his face popping up in doorways before each final battle, fans even created #Doug Bowsette, that trended within 24 hours of the announcement of his accession.

Before informing them of Fils-Aime’s retirement, longtime Nintendo fans, sophomores Conner Gloster and Nicholas Crossler explained the magic behind Nintendo games.

“They’re classic games, and super fun. They usually have a good story behind it and are well developed. My favorite right now is Super Smash Bros because there a lot of characters to play with, and it’s fun to play with other people,” said Gloster.

“[Nintendo Games] are very kid-friendly but still fun. A lot of games nowadays are extremely violent so you wouldn’t be able to play them with little kids, but with Nintendo games, they keep those aspects on the down low while still being fun. Mario Kart is my favorite because you can play with everyone and everyone knows the game and everyone has their favorite characters,” said Crossler.

After receiving the news of Fils-Aime’s retirement, Gloster and Crossler explained their worries and the irony about Bowser’s ascension.

It’s like Nintendo is going to enter a dark age because Bowser is ruling, so that could be bad.”

“I’m sad that Reggie left, but I think that it’s funny that someone with the name of Bowser became president. It’s like Nintendo is going to enter a dark age because Bowser is ruling, so that could be bad,” said Gloster.

“I just hope he doesn’t crash the company,” said Crossler.
